Why a high sales conversion rate can hide a weak coaching business

A high sales-call conversion rate can be useful, but it does not describe the whole coaching business.

A high sales-call conversion rate can be useful, but it does not describe the whole coaching business. The rate depends on who reaches the call, how they were selected and what it costs to acquire and serve them.

Name the denominator

State whether the rate uses booked calls, attended calls or qualified conversations. These are different groups.

For a hypothetical example, nine sales from ten attended calls is a 90% attended-call conversion rate. If many booked calls did not attend, the booking-to-client rate will be lower. Both can be true.

Keep the audience context visible

Existing followers, referrals and cold prospects may arrive with different levels of understanding and trust. A rate from a highly familiar audience does not automatically predict a paid campaign's performance.

Record the source of the calls and the relevant observation period when comparing results.

Include the cost of creating the opportunity

Count the resources involved in acquisition and selling. A strong close rate can still sit inside a process that requires too much time or money for the service's economics.

Do not confuse the value of contracts signed with cash collected or profit available.

Check what happens after the sale

Look at client suitability, fulfilment demands, retention and refunds where relevant. Selling an offer well is not the same as delivering it sustainably.

Use the number to ask a better question

If attendance is weak, inspect qualification and reminders. If suitable people attend but do not understand the service, improve the explanation. If sales are strong but delivery is strained, more calls may not be the next priority.

A conversion rate is most useful as one measure in a defined customer journey. Keep it connected to the business outcome it is meant to support.
