How to position your coaching offer around a specific problem

Position a coaching offer around one specific problem. Why a saturated market is not a competitive one, and how a clear niche makes your offer recognisable.

Why would someone work with you when thousands of coaches, large influencers and polished fitness apps compete for the same clients? The question stops many good coaches. The answer is simpler and more encouraging than it looks.

The market is saturated. It is not competitive.

These are not the same thing, and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes we see coaches make.

There are a huge number of coaches online. A large proportion of them deliver poor results, struggle with their marketing and cycle through clients who leave dissatisfied. Those clients do not disappear from the market. They are still looking for someone who can help them.

This is not a zero-sum game. People do not sign up with a coach once and vanish. They move between coaches, try different approaches and come back looking for a better experience. Every poor coaching relationship creates a potential client who is actively seeking someone better. If you care about your clients and their results, that someone can be you.

You do not need to be the best in the world

Coaches often assume they need to be an expert of national standing before they deserve clients. That is not how clients choose. A client with a specific problem wants someone who understands that problem, communicates clearly and follows through. They compare you with the coaches they can see, not with the best coach who exists.

The bar is competence in three areas: coaching that gets the promised result, delivery that is organised and reliable, and marketing that explains who the offer is for. Consistent work on those three improves the service. Do not use an invented percentile to decide whether you deserve clients. Sustained attention to the audience and the service matters, and outcomes still depend on circumstances and execution.

An automated selling system

Competent coaches can compete without millions of followers because online coaching lets you create something once and use it to help many people. Offline you might fill a class of 30. Online, the same explanation can reach everyone who needs it.

The system we use and teach is a 14-day automated sales sequence that filters for you. It turns away people who are not a fit. It brings in the people who respond to your approach, your values and your style of coaching. And it gives every prospect a consistent experience that makes signing up a clear decision. You still review the results and improve the sequence. The system removes the sales call, not your judgement.

Niching

A clear niche helps a suitable prospect recognise why the offer is relevant to them.

Combining relevant experience with a specific audience makes your positioning more distinct. It does not produce a statistical ranking of coaches. One of the things you combine can be your personality: your story, the way you communicate and the kind of person you naturally attract. That is a real advantage, because nobody else can replicate it.

We call this being the bear on a unicycle. There might be thousands of bears and thousands of unicyclists, but there is only one bear on a unicycle. Be that.

What a good niche looks like

A vague niche like "busy professionals" is not a niche. It does not create the feeling in a prospect that you are speaking to them. It does not filter out the wrong people, and it does not give you an advantage.

A good niche is specific enough that the right person sees your content and thinks: this person is talking to me.

When you get that right, your problem changes. You stop wondering how to get clients and start managing the number of people who want to work with you.

Summary

  • The fitness market is saturated but not competitive. There is room for competent coaches who care.
  • Build the competence and process required to deliver the promised service.
  • Use a clear niche to communicate relevance. Do not present it as a shortcut to expertise.
  • Your story and personality are legitimate advantages.
  • An automated 14-day sales sequence turns a clear position into a repeatable route to clients.
