Should you build your own coaching app?

Build a coaching app when it solves a demonstrated problem that existing tools or a simpler process cannot adequately address.

Build a coaching app when it solves a demonstrated problem that existing tools or a simpler process cannot adequately address. A custom interface is not, by itself, evidence that clients need the product.

Name the problem in the current service

Describe the task clients struggle to complete. Collect examples of where the process fails: access, tracking, communication or another specific step.

Separate a client need from the founder's interest in building software. Both can be real, but they justify different investments.

Test a simpler version

Try the workflow with an existing tool, a structured resource or a manual process where appropriate. Observe whether clients use it and whether it solves the problem.

A test does not need to include every feature of the eventual app. It needs to answer the most important uncertainty.

Count the work after launch

Custom software needs maintenance, access management, support and checks when dependencies change. Include those responsibilities in the decision, not just the initial build cost.

Be especially clear about what client information the app would handle and who would be able to access it.

Keep the commercial problem separate

An app may improve delivery without creating demand for coaching. You still need a clear audience, offer and acquisition process.

If the main constraint is reaching suitable prospects, a more elaborate client dashboard may not address it.

Define the decision threshold

Write what you would need to observe before committing to a build: repeated use, a measurable reduction in friction or a requirement the current setup cannot meet.

The right outcome may be a small custom tool, a better use of an existing platform or no new software. Choose the option that addresses the demonstrated need with a workload the business can support.
