How to stick with one coaching business strategy long enough to test it

How online coaches stay with one strategy long enough to test it: match the calendar to the goal, remove engineered distraction and plan in 12-week blocks.

Choose the business approach you can implement with your current skills, audience and available time. Set a review date before you start so that a difficult week does not become an automatic reason to abandon it.

Consistency is useful when it means carrying out a defined test and learning from the result. It does not make every direction succeed. For most coaches the problem is not ability but distraction.

Your calendar may not reflect your goal

Most online coaches who miss their income goals do not have a skills problem. They have a lead flow problem. Yet their calendars fill with website tweaks, logo changes, new tools and app research. None of that generates leads or closes sales, but it feels safe because you cannot fail at it.

Compare the work you complete with the actual constraint on the business. Design and tool changes can be useful, but they need a clear purpose. Review the calendar against the outcome you intend to pursue and use any mismatch to choose a practical change.

Do this weekly. Your calendar and your goals drift apart without you noticing. Asking whether your week reflects what you are trying to build is one of the most useful habits you can form.

Distraction is engineered

Your phone, laptop and operating system are built for multitasking: browser tabs, multiple windows, notifications with red circles, inboxes that demand attention and feeds tuned to keep you scrolling.

The solution is plain. One screen, one app, one task. Do that one thing until it is done. Use time-boxing and make the task the entire point of that block. You will feel the pull to check email or glance at something else. That discomfort is the work.

Know what reps to do, then do the reps

Focus without conviction is wasted effort in a different direction. If you doubt the plan you are following will reach your goal, you will not fully execute it. You will drive with the handbrake on and quietly look for the next thing to switch to while telling yourself you are committed.

This is why separating planning from execution matters. The framework we find most useful is planning in 12-week blocks, the same way you would structure a training block for a client. Twelve weeks is long enough to make progress and short enough to stay focused, and it lines up with quarterly business reviews.

At the start of each block, set goals across the areas of your life that matter, such as body, mind, relationships and business. Lock in the plan. Then execute without tinkering.

Set an observation period that suits the test and the budget. Review sooner for faults or other defined stop conditions, and label inconclusive results as inconclusive.

Get a coach

Getting a coach in the domains that matter most to you speeds everything up. Coaching compresses timelines. It gives you accountability, structure and access to someone else's years of experience instead of working it all out by expensive trial and error. Paying for the right coaching or mentoring is the closest thing to buying time that exists. That is what the Propane mentorship is designed to do for a coaching business.

The simple thing that works

Jonny, Propane co-founder, puts it this way:

Find a thing that works and lock it in place. Know that when you do that specific thing, leads come in. Know that when leads come in, sales happen. Shut all the windows, lock all the doors, put yourself in a room with a laptop and just do that. It's really the only chance you have of making something like this work.

For us that simple thing is email marketing: writing text-based emails consistently to a list of people who opted in to hear from us. No complex funnels, no viral content strategy, no growth hacking.

It is easy to overlook and easy to dismiss as dead. Mastering it, writing emails that connect with people and move them to act, and staying consistent for months and years, is hard. For the coaches who take it seriously, it produces leads and clients more reliably than most other channels.

Pick a simple idea. Take it seriously.
