Should you have a business partner for online coaching?

A business partner can bring complementary skills and shared responsibility to an online coaching business.

A business partner can bring complementary skills and shared responsibility to an online coaching business. The same arrangement can create friction if you have different expectations about work, decisions or the purpose of the business.

Before committing, examine how you would work together on an ordinary difficult week.

Start with the missing capability

List the work the business needs: marketing, sales, coaching delivery, operations and financial administration. Identify what each person can own and where both would still need help.

A gap in your skills does not automatically require a co-founder. Some work may be better handled through training, a contractor or a defined support role. A partnership involves a broader and more lasting relationship.

Compare expectations openly

Discuss working hours, income needs, risk tolerance and the kind of business you want to build. Explain what happens when one person has less capacity or a different view of the next priority.

Do not assume friendship means these expectations are already shared.

Test the working relationship

A bounded project can reveal how you communicate, meet commitments and handle disagreement. Look for whether responsibilities stay clear when the work becomes less exciting.

Use that experience to identify the arrangements that need to be documented appropriately. Do not treat an informal conversation about effort as a complete agreement about ownership or money.

Establish a decision routine

Propane's founders have described regular meetings with a prioritised agenda and task discussions kept alongside the work. The useful principle is to make decisions and their context easy to find.

Agree who decides within each area, what needs joint discussion and how unresolved questions are handled. Keep action owners visible after the meeting.

Revisit the arrangement as the business changes

The division of work that suits the first clients may not suit a larger team. Review responsibilities and capacity before resentment becomes the main way problems are communicated.

A useful partnership is more than two people sharing enthusiasm. It is a working arrangement that helps the business make decisions and deliver consistently.
