Are business mentorships a scam? Was the $200,000 we spent on own mentorships a waste of money?
I want to give you the truth about the Propane Business mentorship, (and others). There is actually a clear rule for whether you should sign up for a mentorship, and I’m going to cover the one type of mentorship that actually is a scam.
Full Disclosure
My name is Yusef, and we run Propane.
WHAT? "Nice try, Diddy. How can you answer this question on your OWN webiste?"
I'll tell you.
It’s to save us both time.
By the end of this article, I want you to either book a call with us or rage quit the idea of online coaching entirely. I want you to be like the thousands of people we’ve helped. (Coaches who don't make excuses and focus on building.)
Why Do People Call Mentorships "Scams"?
When you see people labeling legitimate businesses as "scams" online, it usually falls into three categories:
Competitors: Other coaches trying to "altruistically" warn you so they can slide into your DMs with their own offer.
Undeclared Affiliate Programs: There are "unbiased reviewers" who trash one program only to link you to another (and make a fat commission in the process). By the way, undeclared affiliate links are illegal and violate FTC guidelines, yet they are rampant in the "make money online" space.
The "Yes, But" Client: These are past clients who bought the "SatNav" but never took it out of the box. They didn't follow the steps, didn't do the reps, and now use the word "scam" as a shield to protect themselves from the painful reality of their own lack of execution.
The Value is in the Application
The value in any education program, whether it’s a university degree, a $20 book, or a high-level mentorship, is entirely dependent on how much you apply.
I recently heard a Coffeezilla interview with an anonymous reviewer of Sam Ovens. The reviewer claimed the training was "rubbish" because it taught business basics he’d already read in books. But here is the catch: If he had actually applied those books, he’d be too busy making money to spend his time doing anonymous reviews out of jealousy.
The Two Types of Client
We’ve all seen the meme:
I used to be high in knowledge but low in execution. I thought the whole world was a "scammy circle jerk" until I realized it was just sour grapes.
Is the fitness industry a scam? We all know someone who follows every fitness influencer but stays out of shape. Why? Because they don't go to the gym. They consume the information but don't bridge the gap to do the thing. You are the missing piece. It is the intersection between you and the program that gets the result.
Real Scams vs. Reality
While "scam" is thrown around loosely, there are real bad actors. Here is what to actually avoid:
The Plagiarists: Copy-paste mentors who rip off other people's work without understanding the principles.
Criminal Activity: Pyramid schemes and people who don't honor their contracts. This is rare but real.
At Propane Fitness, we are transparent about how we make money. You pay us, and we provide a clear set of contractual deliverables, templates, and a lifetime guarantee to help you build your program to 30+ clients. If you follow the steps, the system works. If you don't, no amount of "magic" can save the business.
The "Shame Cave" and Personal Responsibility
Mentorships compress time. They are a multiplier.
If you’ve been through four mentors and they were all "scams," or you’re blaming the algorithm and your ex-wife for your lack of success, the problem isn't the mentorship. It’s your subconscious scripts.
We aren't therapists. If you feel you need excessive handholding or are emotionally deregulated by business challenges, we recommend therapy first. It's $50 an hour and the ROI on clearing your mental "brakes" is phenomenal.
Why We Reject 70% of Applications
We don't take everyone on. We have a stringent process because we want our success rate to stay high. We aren't a "done-for-you" agency; we are the guide. If you show us signs of "low agency" behavior—like asking what to ask ChatGPT instead of just trying it—you aren't ready to lead clients yet.
The Alpha in entrepreneurship comes from taking the risk. If you want absolute certainty, go get a job. If you want to build a business, you have to be the one to make the system work.
Ready to Nail Your Offer?
Success in online coaching isn't about secrets; it's about stacking the pieces in the right order:
Product-Market Match: Your offer and your niche.
Sales Mechanism: An automated system that brings in leads.
